LAST WORD: Winner of New Theatre Restaurant Fred B. Vogel Scholarship

New Theatre Restaurant and DramaBiz Magazine are pleased to announce Kaz Matamura as the winner of the New Theatre Restaurant Fred B. Vogel Scholarship for the Commercial Theater Institute’s Three Day Program held in New York City, May 2 - 4, 2008. Matamura, co-owner of the Secret Rose Theatre in North Hollywood, Calif. and executive producer of Fire Rose Productions, was one of several entrants that applied for the scholarship established in honor of Fred B. Vogel, founder of CTI.

“We had several well-qualified candidates this year,” says Joel Dorr, editor-in-chief, DramaBiz Magazine. “You want to give everyone the opportunity to attend this valuable program, however when we compared notes as to who would benefit most not only for themselves, but the theatre community they serve, we decided on Kaz.”

Matamura, a Classic Japanese Dance Master and one, if not the only Japanese woman to own their own theatre in the United States, applied for the scholarship as a way to help navigate the very confusing road of producing theatre and to gain the financial management skills. Matamura has produced over 50 plays with the Secret Rose Theatre and Fire Rose Productions and also manages the six year-old “ACToberFest” and annual “Ten-Minute Play Competition.”

“I am very pleased to accept the scholarship, and thank New Theatre Restaurant and DramaBiz for the opportunity,” states Matamura. “Because my work is devoted to cultivating the theatre community, I am eager to improve my ability to manage the extensive obstacles that exist in producing theatre today. I am also looking forward to sharing this knowledge with other producers who want to make theater a commercial success.”

The New Theatre Restaurant Fred B. Vogel scholarship was started by Dennis D. Hennessy and Richard Carrothers, artistic directors of the New Theatre Restaurant and DramaBiz Magazine to honor the memory of Fred B. Vogel and his tireless work in creating the Commercial Theater Institute. CTI continues to be dedicated to training the next generation of commercial theatre producers.

Registration for the Three Day Program is now open to anyone interested in producing, co-producing or investing in commercial theatre.
